| Butchers / Farm Shops
- I've not been too impressed
with most of the butchers along the high streets of MK. In general I
buy from farm shops and farmers markets |
|
|
Best Butchers -
Lower Rectory Farm, Great Brickhill, Milton Keynes, MK17 9AF - 01908
375275
- very helpful people, skilled traditional butchers, and happy to tell you which of the local farms
the meat has come from - good supplier of game and venison, and
usually have a good selection of offal. Their sausages are excellent.
Take a look at their new air drying chamber. They are now a good
supplier of cured meats |
|
|
Franklins of Thorncote, Thorncote Green, Sandy,
Beds, SG19 1PU - 01767 627644 -
great for game and free range birds. I get hare, rabbit, wood pigeon,
pheasant, partridge, goose, duck, venison and chicken from them. If you don't feel like driving to
Sandy, they come to Olney, Wolverton & Woburn farmers markets.
Have featured on The Great British Menu, Sunday Telegraph and Observer
in recent years. Their chicken is amongst the best I have ever tasted
and I can really recommend their 3 bird roast for Christmas |
|
|
Woburn

& Woburn farmers markets |

|
|
Springfields Farm, Moorend
Road, Potterspury, NN12 7QG - 01908 543008 - small farm shop now open
every Saturday. Own raised rare breed pork, local hogget and lamb,
well hung beef, own cured bacon. Also sell Kellybronze turkeys at
Christmas. Nice people. |
|
| Farmers Markets |
|
| Olney - 1st Sunday
of the month - 9am - noon - the
best in the area - good beef, game, fish cheese and vegetables |
|
| Woburn
- 3rd Sunday of month - 11am - 3pm - one of the best
markets
around - beef, game, cheese vegetables and The Celtic Bakery |
|
| Wolverton
- 1st & 3rd Saturday of month - 9am
-1pm - a rather small market but Franklins of Thorncote come on the first
Saturday, together with a small vegetable stall and a honey stall |
|
| Winslow - 1st
Sunday of month - a new market but looks worthwhile with cheese, good venison
and game, lamb and mutton stalls |
|
| Fishmongers
- MK is poorly served for good fresh fish on a day to
day basis, but you can use these suppliers at the weekend |
|
| T White & Sons, MK Saturday Market
- 01502 500 805 - white van across from Waitrose - they are happy to
clean and prepare fish if required - will also source fish if asked in
advance - they have a very wide variety of fresh and smoked fish but I
have found their produce freshness to be variable of late, so worth
inspecting the fish before purchase |
|
| Stony Stratford - I
don't know their name, but a mobile fish van is in the small open
market in Timor Court beside the Cock Hotel on Saturdays. Small selection of
variable quality |
| |
| Wine Merchants |
|
|
The Wine Society - I get
much of my wine from these guys - a not for profit co-operative with
free home delivery - very reliable and great wine and spirit selection |
|
|
Stony Wine Emporium
- a new venture in the Odells Yard development in Stony Stratford. They stock more unusual
wines than available in the local supermarkets at the premium end of
the scale and offer a "complete wine purchasing experience".
The owner is helpful and knowledgeable |
|
| Organic Vegetable
Schemes |
|
|
PermOrganics - a
notable not-for-profit agriculture project based in Northampton - I
wish we had something similar closer to MK - supplies some local
restaurants - collect your own box scheme |
|
| Beer |
|
|
Concrete Cow Brewery
- we now have our very own MK based brewery - starting small but
help it to grow - beers available in a number of local pubs and for
home delivery - please give it your patronage |
|
| Bakery |
|
| Not much of note in the
area although I do use
Celtic Bakers that come to Woburn Farmer Market who supply
good organic breads |
|
| Ethnic foods
- as MK becomes a more diverse cultural mix, we are
starting to gain the benefit of a number of new food food suppliers |
|
| Central Oriental
Superstore, 73, Alston Drive, Bradwell
Abbey, Milton Keynes, MK13 9HG.

anything you’d ever need to cook Chinese, Korean, Thai or Japanese
food |
|
| El Elyon
Multicultural Supermarket, 1 Farthing Grove, Netherfield, Milton
Keynes, MK6 4JH. 01908 233100 - African produce |
|
|
| Asparagus
- May & June |
|
| Moulsoe Farm,
Farm Buildings, London Road, Newport Pagnell. 01908 617016 - not
always the best produce, but worth a look |
|
| Warrington House Farm,
Warrington, Olney. 01234 711464 - north of Olney - can usually get
their produce from Frost's Garden Centre butchery |
|
|
|
| Vanilla |
|
| something I use a lot of.
with supermarket prices in excess of £2 per bean, I buy online from
Vanilla Bazaar -
prices as low as 50 pence per bean for their best quality, depending
on quantity ordered |
|
| Services |
|
| MK Oven Cleaners -
01908 610459. I love cooking but hate cleaning ovens.
This company has been doing a good job for me for years now. Highly
recommended. |
